In the context of the consequences of global climate change, the development of suitable adaption strategies is increasingly in the focus of scientific and political interest. However, causalities, especially on a regional level, often stay vague in public discourse. The objective of the environmental education project “ReKli:B – Learning to evaluate regional climate change” is to enhance the evaluation competency of young adults regarding the consequences of and adaptation to climate change in their local neighborhood.

Core of the “ReKli:B”-project is an action-oriented triad with (1) field surveys, (2) in-depth laboratory analyses, and (3) the simplification of interrelationships by experiments and models. The project includes three topic areas – agriculture, forestry and close-to-nature ecosystems – with direct relevance to the participants’ living conditions. Previous and future effects of climate change on the characteristics of the soil or vegetation can be traced, analyzed and interpreted with the help of regional examples. Finally, discussing appropriate adaption strategies integrates the ecological, economic and social aspects of climate change in the context of sustainability and encourages individual decision-making and responsibility.

The project partnership with several schools and the nearby UNESCO Geo-Nature Park Bergstraße-Odenwald is a starting point for a continued anchoring of “ReKli:B”’s educational concept in school and out-of-school environmental education. By means of toolboxes and a multistage training program, the modules will be available beyond the end of the project as well. The project “ReKli:B” is supported by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) and complemented by a cooperation with the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). It helps environmental researchers, educators and stakeholders at various levels to network.

Two dissertations are embedded into the project:
